IPv6 and pfSense Software

Unless noted otherwise, it is safe to assume that a given area or feature of pfSense® software is capable of using IPv6.

Some noteworthy areas of pfSense software that cannot use IPv6 are Captive Portal and most DynDNS providers.

Note

On installations upgraded from versions of pfSense software prior to 2.1, the firewall blocks IPv6 traffic by default.

To allow IPv6:

  • Navigate to System > Advanced on the Networking tab

  • Check Allow IPv6

  • Click Save

Packages

Some packages are maintained by the community, so IPv6 capabilities vary. In most cases, IPv6 availability depends upon the capabilities of the underlying software. It is safer to assume a package does not work with IPv6 unless otherwise noted. Packages are updated periodically, the best practice is to test a package to determine its IPv6 capabilities.
