Installing pfSense Over an Existing FreeBSD Installation

Installing the entire distribution as its own independent operating system is required at this time. The pfSense® distribution is a customized version of FreeBSD, with a custom kernel configuration, several kernel patches, and a number of additional software packages, amongst other customizations.
